My dog is my family, he’s my “baby”, and I consider him my child. He’s also my best friend, he listens to me when I need to vent, and he also becomes my guard dog if I am sick. If I don’t feel good, he’ll lay by me and protect me, making sure that no one bothers me. I would rescue every dog I could if I had the room, but since I don’t I am so excited to share that I’ve paired up with Sam’s Club & PEDIGREE® ! Each time a PEDIGREE® product is purchased at Sam’s Club, the PEDIGREE® brand will donate a bowl of food to a dog in need through the entire month of October. Today I get to share with you my story on my love of dogs and the story of my own baby.
My family has always been dog people, I grew up with the same mix that I have now. Samantha was a beautiful dog, a mix of Newfoundland & Black Labrador. Her body was tall, extremely furry, playful, and lovable. She was found on the side of a parkway back in 1985, by my mother, she was with her little brothers & sisters and only she came into my mom’s car.She became my protector when I arrived in 1986, and at the age of 17 she passed away after being diagnosed with leg cancer.
At the age of 18 I wanted to get another dog, I didn’t want any dog, I wanted the exact mix that my old dog Samantha was. I googled places to rescue or adopt such mixture of breed, and found my current dog Baloo, he was located in South Carolina. After we put in our application, had them check our references we were told there was a catch. The catch was that we weren’t the only people who were looking to adopt Baloo, had to travel to Yonkers to get him, and it was a $200 adoption fee to get him. Baloo came neutered, with all of his shots, and housebroken at the age of 4.5 months old.
We arrived to the place to adopt him, one hour early and were able to adopt him before anyone else did. We traveled home and our adventure began. Baloo’s short life before we adopted him wasn’t a pleasant one, he was beaten, and underfed. He was very afraid of everyone, he cowered when anyone approached him, so it took a long time to get him to trust us. After taking him to the vet to make sure he was healthy, we were told all of his shots were fine but he was 25 pounds under weight. Both of his breeds are large dogs so we were instructed to feed him wet & dry food twice daily until he was the weight he was suppose to be.
After months of feeding Baloo, and enabling him to trust that we wouldn’t beat him, he became the playful fun dog that I get to enjoy even now. We formed a special kind of bond, I was home with him for 3 full months just he and I, going for rides in the car, walking on the leash and cuddling close to me. He was so small when we first got him, he could curl himself into a ball so small and would tuck his nose into his paw.
I love that I was able to rescue Baloo, from being euthanized, unfortunately shelters can’t always keep the dogs until they are rescued. With PEDIGREE® I am able to make sure that dogs in need are able to be fed by purchasing PEDIGREE® Adult Dry Dog Food – 55 lb. bag & PEDIGREE® DENTASTIX® Varity Pack – 62 count. Also, upload a photo of the dog you love to Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #LaterShelter for a chance to be featured on SamsClub.com!
Are you going to upload a picture of your dog to help other dogs in need? I can’t wait to see them on Instagram & Twitter!
what a sweet adoption story! We have shelter cats, and I’m so happy Pedigree helps other shelter animals 🙂 #client
