I’ve decided that 2017 is going to be THE year I complete my one primary goal: to run a half marathon. I’ve realized in my early training days that running either in the morning or on the weekend requires that I fuel properly. Let’s call it fueling up for life: running edition. Read on for how I am going to fuel for the running journey I’m taking.
If you saw my post on Monday that I’ve finally found my “WHY” I want to lose weight. I want to lose weight for me, so I can accomplish the extensive list of goals I have. There are two goals that I’ve been saying I was going to do but never did: 1. complete a half marathon (13.1 miles) 2. complete a full marathon (26.2 miles). Both of those races require plenty of training to finish the race without injuring yourself and getting a Did Not Finish (DNF). After figuring out that I want to do these races for myself, to see what my body is capable of, and be able to push past the mental battle that goes on in my head while running. The why for my weight loss and running go hand in hand. In 2013 when I started this blog, I had already lost 60 lbs, to change how I felt. And I wanted to complete a 5K over the summer along with a few other races that I did complete and became faster each race. By the fall time, I was down to an 11-minute mile, which is fast for me and I was so happy with it. But after becoming complacent (sp?) I gained all the weight back, and my running times skyrocketed back into 16:00 -/+ minute miles. Which to be honest is too slow for some of the races I have signed up to run.
My first half marathon (ever) is April 30th, but before that, I have three different races I’ll be running in. The reason for those three races is to go towards my 9 + 1 for the New York City Marathon in 2018. Since I want to do a full marathon I figured why not do one in my state, the NYC Marathon it would be amazing, running the streets as well as being with my friend Z (who’s my running buddy for most races). For the 9 + 1 you have to run nine races in 2017 that qualify for the program itself (some races do not count) & volunteer for one qualifying race OR raise $1,000. That’s not the only way to qualify for the NYC Marathon, but it’s the “easiest” for me to do without trying to raise money or leaving it to chance with the lottery they have each year. So, that’s the goal right now, train for the half on April 30th, and continue to fuel properly.
Fueling, one of the biggest battles I have had that deals with my running. My workouts at the gym are at 5 am, after that I either run on the treadmill (weather related) or run outside for whatever allotted time or mileage for that day is. After that, I start getting ready for work. On the weekends generally, I go to the gym whenever it opens, and then I’ll run, or I just run and have an off day at the gym. One of the main things I’ve realized that I started to deal with, I have been “hangry” when you’re hungry and angry because you’re so hungry. Also some days it’s hard to function like a normal human, especially if I haven’t gotten a full nights sleep. So what is a woman to do?! I have found the solution to my hangry and weak moments on the weekdays AND weekends. Starbucks coffee and Creminelli Fine Meats™ Felino and Manchego Snack Tray! It’s the best combination for any moment in my life, one of my favorite parts you can order it on the Starbucks app and have it ready for you to pick up along with a cup of your favorite coffee, tea or even water! Pairing my favorite Starbucks drink (Caramel Mocha) and Creminelli has become a staple in my orders, it’s easy for me to pick up after the gym or a run and continue on with my day. The Creminelli keeps me from becoming “hangry”, it’s full of nutty Manchego cheese imported from Spain & mild Felino salami. It’s thinly sliced & packaged for an easy on-the-go gluten free, and protein packed enjoyment. There are no synthetic nitrates & they are made with milk without added rBST either. If I’m not on the go, I’ll usually grab some crackers and make a mini sandwich so that I can get some carbs, or pair it with some grapes. Even if I am on the go, as I am especially on the weekends, the Creminelli Fine Meats™ Felino and Manchego Snack Tray is great for a car ride, or even if you commute. Some lucky Starbucks have a power lunch program, where Creminelli has a pre-packaged box lunch item, but it’s not available at all stores.
Training for a half marathon isn’t easy, chasing after goals never are easy, and I’m okay with that. I’m ready for the challenges if it doesn’t challenge you it won’t change you (Fred Devito). I’m ready for the modification, so I have to get prepared for the challenges that change will give me. I am willing to get back into shape, and back to the pace I once was and hopefully faster. Consistency is key, with anything. With life, running, weight loss, & business you need consistency, if you don’t put the work in no one will put it in for you. You won’t see the results you could’ve been seeing if you had put in ALL the effort at 100%.
If you’re like me and get “hangry” after you workout and are looking for something to snack on that will be delicious, and protein packed, make sure you pick up Creminelli snack trays. Try it with your favorite Starbucks drink, if you’re in a rush order it with the Starbucks apps and you can be on your way with coffee and a delicious snack quickly!
Fueling up for life: running edition will hopefully become a blogging series where you get to follow me in all of my running endeavors, & snacking with Creminelli and Starbucks afterward. Check out Creminelli on Facebook & Instagram!
