Ah yes, you read that right, on Monday I mentioned that I am kicking my own butt with working out. I also slipped in that I am preparing for my first half marathon. A half marathon is 13.1 miles, double a 10K, and a whole lot of training ahead of me. The training will take 12 weeks to complete, I will slowly work my way up to being able to run/walk a full 13.1 miles. The training began last week and will end the week BEFORE my half actually is, which is October 5th. The week before my half, I will do intervals and “slow” miles all under or around 6 miles. Just to keep my body “warm” for running, and so when I do end up running the 13.1 my body won’t be going into shock.
I was never a runner, but after I started to run I fell into a love/hate relationship with it. I told y’all about why I started running, and last year I decided this year 2014 I want to run a half marathon. I picked the Diva Half because it is on the island, close to home about a 45 minutes drive, and it was reasonably priced. I will be honest, I am a little nervous for my training, the furthest I’ve ever rain was almost 6 miles, and that was hills. One of my friends who runs half marathons for breakfast said after mile 10, it’s only a 5K! So I am trying to train my brain of certain things right now.
My run training is five days a week, one long run day which is either a Saturday or Sunday. The four other days are shorter runs, about 45 minutes to an hour long. My lifting schedule varies from four days to 5 days a week, some days I’ll be doubling up the only days that will be single are my long run days, so ALL of my energy can go into the run.
I very lucky that I am in a group of amazing runners that are SUPER supportive of my running my first half. Most of them are doing half marathons several times a year and sometimes do a full marathon {26.2 miles}. I am lucky that I am in this runstart program to help me better pace myself and that I have 3 other women who usually run my pace or a bit faster. I really would have never thought in a million years I would be saying, “I am training for a half marathon” but I am and it’s a wonderful feeling. I know this will keep me accountable, and I am hoping that I can put a few more half marathons under my belt and work my way up to a full marathon. I will say though, that one day I’d love to run in the NYC Marathon and in the Boston Marathon, that would be epically awesome.
